Since 2003, Aya has devised, written and directed numerous plays. Their early work as a writer/director reframed classic literature to decenter their male perspectives. Over the years, their work evolved to explore the lived experience of immigrants and Asian women in relation to critical world events. Most recent work has delved into explorations based on autobiography and interview.
